Foundations… my top 3.

Ladies and gents, something I haven’t done in a while is talk about makeup, simply because I don’t wear much of it anymore. However there are odd days where I feel up to it and may throw on one of my favourite foundations, so I’ve rounded them up for a quick conversation.

In parcticular, there are three that I go between regularly…

< in order of preference >

it Cosmetics / Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream w/ SPF 50+ / $38.00

it Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+, Heavenly Skin Perfecting Brush, Bye Bye Pores Finishing Powder

For the longest time I had read and heard great reviews about this well-rounded product but it wasn’t accessible in Canada yet. When I went to New York City in April I obviously dashed for Sephora and stocked up on whatever it Cosmetics I could. The Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream being one of the products.

I generally wear it when I’m headed somewhere fancy that requires bringing my A-Game, and here’s why:

  • Full-coverage, and I mean FULL. You’ve never seen a CC Cream hide your baggage like this bad boy can,
  • Beyond radiant complexion,
  • Full UVA/UVB protection,
  • Skincare benefits from an anti-aging serum featuing Hydrolyzed Collagen.

I will suggest pairing it with the recommended Heavenly Skin Smoothing Complexion Brush for optimal application and wear. I can’t go an application without it.

You’re also going to want to make sure it’s set well and if keeping to the full range of products I’d say go with the Bye Bye Pores Pressed Powder from it Cosmetics, yet another personal favourite.

Seriously though, you can’t go wrong.

Surratt Beauty / Surreal Real Skin Foundation Wand / $65.00

Surratt Beauty Surreal Real Skin Wand

About a year ago I was on the hunt for a new foundation, and again, just so happened to be in New York City as well. At the Sephora on 5th Avenue I came across the line Surratt Beauty, also not available in Canada, and an inclination led me to grab their Surreal Real Skin Foundation Wand.

This unique product has a pump at the bottom and bristled applicator at its top for a one-stop-shop product that has it all concealed into one cylinder. Its a smooth and seamless application that leaves the skin looking fresh and dewy, with every wear. It also last great throughout the day, but do expect a HEAVY glow by the end of the day if you have a slightly oilier skin type.

The only down fall to this great foundation is the possibility of damaging the applicator, leading to the overall waste of the entire product. However it hasn’t happened yet, so I’ll just go ahead and knock on a piece of wood.

I say try it. You won’t regret it. It’s definitely going to remain one of my top picks for quite a while.

The Ordinary / Coverage Foundation / $6.90

The Ordinary Coverage Serum Foundation

When it comes to The Ordinary by Deciem there isn’t much more to be said other than cost effective and results oriented. The Toronto brand popped up just a few years back and has made their mark, fast. Whenever I head into one of their shops the Coverage Foundations are never in stock which make them hard to come by.

So when I went into the Bay & Bloor store last week and saw a full shelf, I 100% matched my shade and snagged a bottle.

For $6.90, I’m not going to complain…

  • It has light wear but great coverage (not nearly as much as the it CC+ Cream though),
  • Sits well over a light moisturizer,
  • Lasts well through contact with light water.

I would certainly not recommend it for an OILY skin type and would highly suggest a slightly mattifying setting powder to finish the application off. The full range of shades also makes it a product for almost any skin colour.

Goodluck getting one. But if you do, enjoy!

Essentially these are the foundations I wouldn’t be able to live without, as of right now.

If you’ve tried any of the above leave us some of your thoughts. If not, happy testing! All the links provided will get you to the right places.

Remember the Foundations,

Rescued on a Sunday / Skincare Routine

Happy Sunday kiddo’s, it’s an absolutely gorgeous day in Toronto and that deserves a day of pampering as well as some R&R.

Last week was a slightly hectic one, but when is it not, I mean really; however I made it through with my skin still intact. Although, as I got to the end of the week I began seeing some of the impact from the added stress, and I absolutely DESPISE stressed skin, so here’s what we’re going to do to aleviate that issue…

Rescued on a Sunday Routine,                     For Normal/Oily Skin with Textural Issues and Slight Pigmentation

  1. 1 Pump ~ Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash to kickstart the skin into its woken state, reduce puffiness and invigorate,
  2. 10 Minutes ~ L’Oréal Pure-Clay Red Algae Mask for a gentle exfoliation, energized radiance and youthful glow,
  3. 5 Minutes ~ Kiehl’s Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Mask to refresh the skin with a burst of hydration and calm any infmaled, red or irritated areas,
  4. Kiehl’s Brightness Activating Toner to restore pH and reduce building of melanin,
  5. Kiehl’s Age Defender Eye Contour Cream to reduce dark circles, puffiness and initial signs of aging,
  6. 3 Drops ~ The Ordinary 2% Hyaluronic Acid + B5 to hydrate the skin and restore its’ texture,
  7. 3 Drops ~ The Ordinary 12% Ascorbyl Glucoside to combat melanogenesis,
  8. 3 Drops ~ Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate to supply anti-oxidants and a healthy, warm glow,
  9. 1 1/2 Pumps ~ Kiehl’s Skin Rescuer to calm and moisturize stressed skin.

Now, didn’t that feel incredible?

These bad boys are my go-to whenever my skin is feeling weak, malnourished and/or stressed. All together, they’re some of my favourite products.

So if you find you’re skin is ever feeling stressed or beginning to wear-down you might want to consider taking a look at a few of these products. And as always, hit me up with any questions or if you want some added guidance.

Keep your skin calm and it shall carry on,

The Art of Layering

Each and every morning, as well as night, when I open my cabinet doors in the bathroom I am faced with an array of products that I am privileged to own. Then follows the question, where do I begin? As someone who invests a great deal of time into his skin I often need to take a step back and devise some sort of game plan, in order to provide my skin with what it needs at that exact moment. Of course, there are about 13 products that remain consistent in my routine on a daily basis; however let us also take into account the multiple exfoliators and masques that are incorporated as well.

For the sake of simplicity I will stick with my go-to system that I find works for me. Keep in mind that we all bear different skin types than one another, but we also carry varrying concerns.

The basic starter-system often recommended is a cleanser, toner and moisturizer. This sounds absolutely preposterous to those of us who obsess over our skin, does it not? If you are anyting like me your daily routines probably consist of, wait for it: multiple cleansers, toners, eye creams, serums, oils, moisturizers, sunscreen and a primer. Emphasis on the plural. So where do all of these sit in conjuction to one another?

Well let us chat…

Clarisonic with Deep Pore Cleansing & Normal Brushes

Professionals will suggest that layering should begin with the product bearing a thinner consistency and follow through in order to the product with the thickest consistency. I whole heartedly agree with and operate under this structure as well, always after a double cleanse. The key is to structure your routine so that your products and their ingredients compliment one another, and so that they can also function as a unified whole in synergy. The best way to do this is certainly through trial and error which is when samples become our best friend.

Things to look for during this trial period:

  • Redness, sensitivity and/or irritation,
  • Bumps and/or Acne,
  • Excess oil production,
  • Dry and/or flaky skin,
  • Uneven skin tone and/or pigmentation,
  • Dull skin,
  • Rough texture.

Keep in mind that you want to address your concerns, at least the primary and secondary ones, with your routine. Also keep in mind that your samples will probably not produce immediate results; rather they will give you some insight into the feel, smell and look of a product as well as its potential compatability with your skin.

To uncover what your concerns are I suggest a visit to a credible Skincare retailer, or better yet feel free to get in touch with myself for some quick and genuine advice.

Now for my routine, in order of usage:

  1. Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energizing Facewash with Clarisonic – Normal Brush,
  2. Arcona Toner Tea Bar,
  3. Kiehl’s Brightness Activating Toner ,
  4. Kiehl’s Age Defender Eye Repair (applying an eye cream before a serum will prevent possible irritations),
  5. The Ordinary. Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (hydrating serums first),
  6. Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate,
  7. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream (moisturizers, creams or lotions last),
  8. Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ (sunscreen is a must as a preventative to aging but also when using any brightening product or one that has a hasrsher interaction),
  9. Hylamide HA Blur – Finisher (to prepare for makeup).

  1. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil (oil removes oil AND makeup),
  2. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser with Clarisonic – Deep Pore Cleansing Brush,
  3. Kiehl’s Brightness Activating Toner,
  4. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye,
  5. The Ordinary. Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5,
  6. Kiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate (gels after hydrating product),
  7. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate,
  8. Kiehl’s Pure Vitality Skin Renewing Cream.

Trial and error has guided me here.

I am being too true when I say not everyone has the ability to operate at this caliber; I have a sick obsession with personal care. I do need to stress one more piece of advice before wrapping this up…

Some products work best when given time to absorb between applications.

I speak truths. This is not only a fact but I can guarantee that if you put this theory to the test you may be satisfied with the results. I recently introduced this policy into my own routine and I have nothing but positive things to say in return. Some products like Benzoyl Peroxide for example, which treat concerns like Acne, do require up to 3 hours to sit before another product is applied; this allows the Benzoyl Peroxide to function at its full potential. Not all products require this amount of wait time but most do benefit from at least a 5-minute interval when layering. Again, it never hurts to do some research for the overall benefit of yourself, your skin, and your investment into Skincare products.

The PM Routine

It is my hope that I was able to provide some insight into how you can perfect your process and maximize on your natural beauty. If you have any questions or would like further guidance please do not hesitate to reach out.

I do not bite, promise.

Stay in Order,

DECIEM The Abnormal Beauty Company, Deviance that Trends

Only a few years ago, in 2o13, DECIEM hit the market by trade with their ‘Abnormal’ approach to Skincare, and well the Beauty Industry as a whole. They carry their own brands of Skincare, Haircare and Bodycare: NIODHylamideThe Chemistry BrandThe Ordinary./’stemm/FountainhifWhite Rx and AB CREW.  At some point you may notice and be drawn to the very unusual, simple yet visually appealing marketing and advertising that can be seen in and around Toronto; more recently when the company opened the doors to their first store on Queen Street early in the summer of 2016. To elaborate on what I mean when I say simple, what you see is the black and white colour scheme that emphasizes DECIEM The Abnormal Beauty Company as the consistent branding.

Quite like the modern and simple approach to the company branding, boutiques are now popping up accross the city, Yorkville and The Distillery District to name a few, as well as across the world; they also carry an open-concept, loft-style shopping experience that correlates to the overall concept. In a day and age where marketing teams are using all angles to target markets across the globe and SEO organizations are monitizing clicks, it makes sense to let the products do the talking. One may call it, unusual.

DECIEM The Abnormal Beauty Company is a name I haven’t quite been able to escape lately, and to no surprise my curiosity gets the best of me again today and I make a visit to their small but well-stocked boutique at Parliament and Carlton with the intention of try something new. Since I work for another Skincare company myself it’s not often that I deviate away from the norm and dip my fingers into something other than what we retail, and I mean literally. However this feels like the appropriate time to do so with a peeking interest. I throw on my jacket and head out the door just two blocks East of the intersection I currently live at.

DECIEM The Abnormal Beauty Company, 242 Carlton Street

When I arrive I open the door and take a step inside an Apothecary that differs from any other, I instantly become a kid in a newly discovered candy store. The interior, which is a warmly designed open-concept, invites with a beautiful plank table and bench that sits center to the products lining the brick walls of the studio retail space. Without hesitation I instantly become drawn to the shelf that retails the boosters, serums and primers. Currently my skin is extremely dehydrated and I’m in need of a new primer so this seems to be the right direction, keeping in mind to explore the rest of this heavenly place after finding what I need.

To my surprise, it doesn’t take me long despite the array of Beauty strung out across the store.

Options live at DECIEM The Abnormal Beauty Company and it’s clear to anyone who enters one of their stores, or even checks out their website. For that reason it helps to ask for assitance from one of their representatives or do some research online prior to seeking your own experience. Last night when I did my digging via the web I came across a primer and serum I want to incorporate into my routine. The Hylamide Finisher HA Blur and The Ordinary. Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 serum are my choices. Knowing that these are what I came for I gather them and place them aside as I explore some more.

The lady behind the cash-wrap who provides a small greeting when we first arrive needs to be probed for answers, unlike some stores where customer service representatives are willing to provide the insight without the initial inquiry. So I probe on through her sweetness. When doing my research last night I also become intrigued by a product from the AB CREW line called the Hair Minimizing Body Hydrator which is supposed to minimize the re-growth of body hair post-removal. Neat, huh? A hydrating body lotion that stunt’s the growth of hair after a shave or wax. Enough said, you can count me in. She continues on to explain to me what I already know based off of my experience on www.deciem.com, so I allow her back to her desk to continue on working away as she was.

The Ordinary. Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 and the Hylamide Finisher HA Blur

After about another 10 minutes of analyzing products and ingredients while exciting myself ridiculously over things I probably don’t need/ already have, I approach the desk to make my purchase. While the kind and beautiful young lady rings me through she shares with me some company information and it delights me to hear that the products are a Toronto-based brand(s) made right here in the city. This helps to explain the ridiculously low cost of a highly-active serum and primer for only $29.15 CAD with tax. If your jaw just dropped, rightfully so. She delightfully hands me my bag with my goodies and I snap a few photos of the luxuriously modern boutique before heading out.
I can’t help but stress that you do yourself the service and find the time to trek on over to one of the few locations now being offered by  DECIEM The Abnormal Beauty Company. This includes Seoul in Korea, as well as Melbourne and, soon, Sydney in Australia. It’s clear that they have something working exceptionally well for them and it’s worth it to make the discovery now while it still remains much more personable and than other brands on the market, while also keeping to their philosophy by beautifully different.

I’ll also be following up in two weeks with my results after beginning to use today’s haul, keep posted.

Stay Deviant,

Peter. Xo
